I planted these Bixa at the Irrigation Pond for some years now and they are looking good. I would say these are old school plants because they are seldom used in our landscapes anymore.
The split fruit with the dense amount of seeds remind me slightly of a snake with a gaping mouth, ready to swallow its prey. But then, it also seemed like a mass of carnivorous plants, much like those venus-fly traps shown in cartoons snapping at walking prey.
Thankfully, they may look menacing close-up, but the scarlet red fruits are actually very beautiful to look at and the plants are a wonderful addition to a garden.
