CENTRAL MALL & BUGIS +

The pedestrian overhead bridge in front of Central Mall was planted with the Bauhinia kockiana. Further in the background stood a Yellow Rain Tree.

In the Central Mall podium were two red lampshades, which received a revival in Hong Kong recently for its subtle but significant illumination of meat in wet markets where the red glow provided a better appreciation of the meat by the buyers. The giant lampshade were constructed and sliced into two separate structures to provide seating spaces for the shoppers to rest their legs. Interestingly, when viewed from outside, there appeared to be a dozen of legs below the lampshade but these are all fake and are merely supporting structures to hold the lampshade upright.

Over at Illuma, which is renamed as Bugis + recently, I was captivated by the rooftop gardens that covered part of the facade of the iconic building. Renovations are ongoing and the new and biggest Uniqlo store in Singapore will open its doors here to visitors soon.

REFLECTION

It is not often that we see reflections of trees but I saw this beautiful reflection of the Rain Tree on the car back window panel at the Singapore Expo yesterday and couldn't resist taking this photo. Shadows of trees are pretty, aren't they?

SARACA & EPIPHYTES

 Today's weather - sunny
These Saraca trees planted around 2005 at this down ramp from ECP to Beach Road are so big and beautiful now. I am glad we made the right choice.

On the other side of the road, the epiphytes on the Rain Tree are also colonizing the tree forks naturally. I just wished there were more tree branches so the picture looked more complete.

COLLARED KINGFISHER

What was the Collared Kingfisher doing in the top photo, perched on the Rain Tree branch? Was it showing me its white collar, I wonder?

Their presence here is a common sight. In fact, this garden has a high diversity of birds and it is a norm to see different species of them if one is observant enough.

NATURE'S ART

Nature is really beautiful if we look carefully. If I did not show the top few photos, would anyone know that the yellow and green mosses are growing on the trunk from this tree?

This Rain Tree was deliberately planted with lots of epiphytic plants e.g. orchids, Dischidia, but I think the ferns and mosses were either stowaways or grew naturally.

Either way, I think nature is a good artist, judging from the way some of these plants were growing.

NEW MRT LINE CONSTRUCTION

The new MRT line construction is underway and trees e.g. Rain Tree, along Rochor Road, Sungei Road and Bukit Timah Road (beside Little India MRT) were felled to make way for it.

Presumably, these trees would be transplanted out to other places? It's sad to see them go as I had a hand in planting some of them.
