EUCROSIA BICOLOR

The unknown plant put out a lot of broad leaves and flowered recently. Viola, it is a Eucrosia bicolor and not a Eucharis grandiflora.

Whilst there were about 8 buds altogether, I wasn't particularly impressed by it because the size of the small red flowers just does not commensurate with the leaf size. I would have preferred it to be the large, white flower Eucharis.

I will be giving it away to someone who appreciates it more.

BULBS

Alright, I am not talking about light bulbs here. I am referring to a group of plants with a swollen storage organ that gives rise to its fleshy leaves and roots. Some of the common types of bulbs include the edible onion and garlic, ornamental lilies e.g. Narcissus.

Anyway, there was this clump of  bulbous weeds, which I collected and brought home to wash off the dirty soil. I then planted some of them into an existing container garden of Fittonia cultivar and Hedera helix (common name: Common Ivy, English Ivy) and others into the planters along my corridor.

So are these the white flower Eucharis grandiflora (common name: Amazon Lily) or red flower Eucrosia bicolor (common name: Peruvian Lily)? We shall wait and see.

EUCHARIS AMAZONICA

The Amazon Lily from the Amaryllidaceae Family is not a new plant but neither is it common.

I planted quite a bit of them at the Home Garden but they were all gone. These photos were taken at the Singapore Botanic Gardens near the Visitor's Centre.

The monocotyledonous leaves with parallel veins were so healthily green and contrasted sharply with the white flowers.
