FAUNA AT BAY EAST

There is this clump of Stachytarpheta indica that is actually a weed in the flowerbed at the Bay East garden entrance. However, since it was growing so well, I decided to keep it around back then.


It has rewarded the butterflies, such as this Painted Jezebel, by providing nectar to them.


Over at the pond area, I sometimes spot single marsh or shore birds, like this Common Sandpiper, strolling on the turf. Perhaps there is some food around for them to feed on.

COMMON SANDPIPER

The Common Sandpiper (scientific name: Actitis hypoleucos) is commonly seen at mangrove mudflats of Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve, in flocks foraging amongst the muddy ground for their food.

This sandpiper was seen by me flying and landing onto the muddy grounds of the monsoon canal along Pasir Panjang Road when I made my way for lunch a few days ago. After it landed and I whipped out my camera from my bag, I had a hard time trying to find it amongst the canal base because its size and colour blended so well into the background. Finally I found it.

What brought it in? Why was it alone? How does it keep its white feathers so pristinely clean in the mud? I don't have the answer.
