CATS IN THE NEIGHBOURHOOD

I brought Sandy for a walk the other day and suddenly noticed that a cat was hanging around a sculpture area. When I moved nearer, I was surprised to find a mynah lying strangely on the plaque of the sculpture. As I wasn't wearing my glasses, I wasn't really sure what the mynah was doing. Even as I approached even nearer, the cat didn't flinch or move away but stood guarded. It was then that I realized the mynah looked dead although I wasn't sure if the cat killed it and placed it there like a trophy or it was merely guarding it?

Anyway, not far away, a cat snuggled up against the leg of one of the park benches.

Frankly, there are many more resident cats in the area.

DRAGONFLY LAKE, LION GROVE & CHINESE GARDEN

Today's weather - sunny
This is the Dragonfly Lake where a red and a cyan giant dragonfly seemed to fly straight out of the waters.

At the Lion Grove, a series of wall mounted white lions were spouting water from their opened mouths, which contrasted starkly with the colourful bromeliads. There are also a number of tall orange-grey stones that were strategically placed for best effect.

In a Chinese Garden, it is not uncommon to find sculptures. Here, we have a cut-out sculpture known as "离乡" (li xiang), which refers to the mainland labourers who left their hometown. It is also here where we can see some wonderful varieties of Plumeria (common name: Frangipani).

CLOUD FOREST PART 1

With the recent opening of the Gardens by the Bay's Bay South gardens to the public on 29 Jun 12, the secret is finally out.

This is one of my few visits to the Cloud Forest conservatory and I am sure there are lots of photos of the conservatory on the internet. I will let my photos speak for itself. Greeting visitors at the entrance is the highest man-made waterfall in Singapore. Some of these plants are truly amazing and I love the beads of water droplets collecting on the leaves of the conifers right after the misting. The Rhododendrons are also spectacular and look almost like fake plants.

The giant snail sculpture and totem pole add a mysterious allure to the tropical montane forest look.

SCULPTURES

What's the inspiration and messages behind these sculptures at the Singapore Expo? Their poses are, hmmm, unusual.

BOY & DOG SCULPTURE

The sculpture of the boy and dog is probably one of those in Chinatown to depict the early days of the settlers along the Singapore River. It reminded me of the ones at Telok Ayer Green.

This particular one shows a boy holding something in his hand, and looking towards the direction of the sea, whilst his dog slept quietly next to him. There were some uplighters to lit up the sculpture at night, but unfortunately one of them has become a tray to stub out cigarettes. Poor dog, maybe it inhaled too much smoke that it fainted.

KAMPUNG LIFE SCULPTURE

I have never seen this sculpture until now. It reminded me of the ones at Telok Ayer Green. Could they be from the same sculptor to depict kampung life in the not so distant past?
